Linux Foundation, the pioneers of open source software have announced plans to offer a corporate credit card. The innovation could be copied by companies throughout the UK in the future.
The not-for-profit consortium is dedicated to promoting the use of open-source operating systems for computers. The Linux Foundation releasing their own credit card will go towards helping improve the community. Currently the credit card is only being planned for release in the USA.
The Visa credit card will be offered through CardPartner and the UMB bank. Each customer who signs-up donates approximately £30 to the Linux Foundation automatically. The credit card will be branded with a picture of the famous Linux cartoon penguin mascot, "Tux".
The Linux Foundation said in a statement: "Funds raised from our new Visa card program will go directly toward providing community technical events and travel grants for open source community members in order to accelerate Linux innovation."Branded credit cards are increasingly being used by intuitions to raise money and awareness. Football club Manchester United already have one of the most popular credit cards in South Korea and the University of Cambridge is also planning to release its own credit card.
The Linux Foundation plan to invest any money made from the credit card scheme into improving the existing community and their open source operating system.
